Blog Post 13

ALEX is a resource designed for assisting teachers. ALEX is divided up into eight different components. First, is course of study. There you will find a link for all the subjects taught (English, Social Studies..etc) and the course of study grade level appropriate. The next link is called Web Resources which is a link to other resource links directed for teachers. Some links listed includes: Health/Physical Education, Career/Technical Education among others. These links are designed to help equip teachers to be the best teachers possible. The next link is Lesson Plans. This link is designed to answer any questions regarding how to write and carry out a lesson plan in the classroom. There is a personal workplace link, proffesional learning link, Podcast treasury and Alexvile link. I found ALEX to be a great help and resource for teachers. The website was easy to access and find information on.

The ACCESS program 's goal is to create equity through additional educational offerings for all Alabama public high school students. The website offers course offerings, test prep and many educational resources for helping students engage in learning. I found this website to be very helpful and full of useful information for students, parents and teachers. Easy to use and useful tools to use for encouraging quality education.

Additional Assignment #5

In the blog posts made by Mr. Spencer, there were many thought provoking ideas, comments, beliefs and attitudes presented that spark interest in an educators mind. As educators, we are not trying to reinvent the wheel of education, we are sinply trying to take what we have and add new tools to encourage and help cultivate effective and engaging education. As teachers we are to represent not only helpful change but a listening ear. We should be listening to our students and how they learn best. We are to bridge the gap of ineffective, unchallenging subject matter and bring it to life through the resources and tools we have available.

Summary Post C4T #3

The teacher I had was Morgan Bayda a Elementary school teacher in Canada.
The first post I commented on was about her trip to Costa Rica and help do community work with them. She did lots of planting and baking along with craft projects. Ms. Bayda was very involved with the school children there in the community. It was a time for her to give back and help encourage a community. I told Ms. Bayda that I was encouraged to see her and others reaching out to other communities. Helping others is so rewarding!

The second post I read was again about her experience in Costa Rica. She worked with many children in the local school and experienced so much. She made the statement life is full of choices and that is so true. We have the choice to make a difference with our life or not. As teachers we have the opportunity to change the lives of so many students. We can bring change and help the success of this generation.

There was a split in the responses regarding the issue of Youtube being a safe educational website for all students. Youtube offers many educational videos and resources, however some content on Youtube may not be appropriate for all students.

I have learned from this survey that social networking can be used in the classroom. Many students feel that this can be used and be effective for today's students. How can we be the best possible teachers for this generation? Find what will engage them to learn. Modern technology and resources will do this task and will open up a brand new way to learn.

A Vision of K-12 Students Today

Blog Post 12

"A Vision of K- 12 Students Today"

Watch this video and write a three paragraph response to what you have seen. Write about your thoughts and what you can apply to your teaching strategy through this video.

My Response

I feel like this video is very inspiring and challenging to current and upcoming teachers for several reasons. The first point that really challenged me was the fact that students are digital learners. There are so many resources out there today to engage a student in learning. Ebooks are a great resource to use in the classroom. So many books have gone digital and I feel this is a great way to listen and comprehend.

A second point I really liked was the statistics presented about how so many individuals do not graduate from high school and end up working so many jobs. Why is this? There are many reasons, however, students should never say school is boring. As teachers we have to engage our students in learning. Obviously, we are going to have some students that will not want to engage, but we must always try. We must always present our best effort to help encourage the academic success and future of our students.

Another point I really liked about the video was all the various digital electronics presented in the video. A camera, computer, ipod, e-readers,blogging,etc. This type of interactive teaching is what todays students want and need. Allowing the students to interact through blogging with other students and schools opens up a brand new way of learning and engaging in the classroom. Allowing students to create a "lesson" on a particular subject matter and teaching to the class opens up interaction, communication and self confidence. Using todays tools that students are so involved with, and using it for academic purposes only makes sense. Students are wanting to learn, it is up to us to evaluate, think and act on what we have learned and continue to learn about this generation.

"Little Kids, Big Potential"

This video really captured the wonderful resources of technology being utilized in the classroom.
The first example was the students using a blog for educational purposes. The webpages layed out for the students were very beneficial for the students. They would be able to sharpen many different skills through these resources. Wikis are great pages to utilize. These pages are very creative and fun to use for learning.  Videos and Skype are great resources to use. Teachers can connect with other classrooms and teachers to share various subject matter through Skype and videos. Ms. Cassidy is definetly utilizing a variety of resources that are extremely beneficial to the students. This type of instruction and learning is the best way for students to comprehend and maintain. This hands on approach is the best way to hold the attention of students. As I teacher, I would love to implement these ideas and concepts to the classroom. I feel this is the best way for the students to learn. Interaction with others and other technology invokes thought and effort to challenge and encourage excellence.

Blog Post 10

"Open Letters to Educators" was a very thought provoking post. Morgan Bayda really pointed out some great areas of improvement in the educational system. Many teachers are still modeling the same methods of teaching from many years ago. Todays students need interaction in the classroom. Todays students need discussion in the classroom. Often times, many students get discouraged with education because of the "boring nature" of the class. As teachers we can strive to make learning interesting, innovative, fun and interactive. We must be willing to do what it takes to provide the best quality education for our students.

"Two Questions That Can Change Your Life"

What's My Sentence?
"He lived his life true to his deepest convictions".

Was I better today than yesterday?
I feel like the answer to that question is yes. I feel like as humans we are a constant work in progress. We live, we learn, we make mistakes and we move on. We are constantly learning. We have to learn from our past mistakes and learn to make wise decisions and leave a legacy of not just surviving but truly living.

Blog Post 9

After reading Mr. Mcclung's post I gathered several important points that will definetely aid me in the classroom. First, being flexible and communicating with the students is a big deal. As teachers, we have to be willing to adjust our schedule and how we conduct the classroom. Problems will arise and we have to be aware of this fact. We must also take the time to build relationships with our students. What we invest in our students will eventually start showing.

Secondly, as teachers we have to be aware of the latest technology and see how it can be used for our benefit in the classroom. Technology is constantly changing, and it is up to us to educate ourselves. Students can benefit from this knowledge. There are many benefits to utilizing modern technolgy in the classroom.

Thirdly, listen to your students. This is a huge concept. Teachers can never listen enough. Students are desperately wanting to be heard. We have to take the time to see life through their perspective. Listening is a major key to success among students on a personal and academic level.

My comments on Mr. Mcclung's post consisted of me saying that I thought his ideas of being a successful teacher were very helpful and encouraging. I feel like he truly did want to help other teachers by the ideas he presented in his post. Mr. Mcclung is a smart man and will go far with students if he embraces these values in his teaching style.

Summary Post C4T #2

The blog I was assigned to was titled "Integrating ICT in to the MFL classroom" by Joe Dale. The first article I read on the blog was titled "Catherine Elliott on stop-motion animation, web 2.0, the iPad and primary languages". This article was discussing the idea of using various kinds of technology for eduational purposes. One example was using an ipad for language comprehension. Catherine Elliott was a teacher using various technological resources for the classroom. I told Joe Dale that I thought there were some really good ideas presented in the blog. I felt especially inspired by the use of the ipad. So many possibilites in todays society to improve and challenge educational performance.

The second article I read and commented on was titled "Craig Smith from Language Perfect on the success of the European Language Olympics". This article demonstrated the use of international competition to boost academic performance. The idea of using this concept is very brilliant. Students love competition and will joing in very quickly when prompted. This tactic is another wonderful way to focus the minds of students on so many academic subject. Language Arts, History, Science and Math are all areas that can be discussed and challenged in this type of format. I commented by saying that I thought these were great ideas and should be very successful.

"This is How We Dream" Part 1
This video presented the concepts of incorporating text with multimedia.
Incorporating print, visual and sound documents together is a very creative way to present as a teacher. This type of presentation can revolutionize how we teach.Making these types of presentations will spark interest among students.Using these types of media is a very successful way to create interest in historical dates and facts as well as new modern day materiel.

"This is How We Dream" Part 2
Educational lectures online are a great resource. This type of media is very helpful in creating enthusiasm for learning among students.I would be willing as a teacher to incorporate these ideas and concepts in to my teaching.I feel like the current generation is a technologically driven group of students and they would possibly understand subject matter better through this approach.

Creating new ideas and incorporating them in the classroom is crucial. As teachers we have to think of the best strategies that will connect with the students.Using the multimedia lectures would be a great example of modern resources being utilized. Many creative and innovative ideas are still to come and as teachers we need to be aware of what we can use to be effective in the classroom.

"Chipper" and "EDM for Dummies"
These videos emphasize doing your work in this course and on time. The assignments that need to be done are all related to today's advances in technology and how they can be used in the classroom. The videos did present very important content. It is important to fully understand what this course is all about.I would like to do a video related to some technological  ideas that teachers can use in the classroom. A video about how as teachers we can never be creative enough.

Interactive White Boards
The articles described the interactive white boards as not the most effective tool available today. The articles argued that the boards are not the answer to todays issues in school.Creating an enviroment where there is student interaction and challenging the students to think outside of the box is a big part of change.A teacher can create a classroom where media and education collide.Taking steps toward that direction is the foundational matter at hand.

Interactive Smart Boards can be effective for some students. For students that may need more of a hands on approach, this technology can be useful for them. This resource can aid teachers but not take the place of them.If teachers are willing to use the boards correctly and efficiently, this tool can aid a percentage of the students. http://interactivewhiteboardinsights.blogspot.com/2010/05/reasons-why-interactive-whiteboards-are.html

Additional Assignment #2

I think learners can teach themselves. It is proven through the
trial that was done, children can learn so quickly. I feel like they can teach themselves in most areas. There are some areas that children need guidance in to be totally successful. Children need to be able to have adequate learning conditions like a safe and secure learning facility and a computer. These are some essential tools. Computers and internet are an essential in many cases for learning today.Education has slowly begun to rely on technology to be successful. Computers and internet provide teachers with tools, organization and resources. Motivation is the number one key to a successful education.Without motivation,an individual will struggle to finish their education.Problems and questions should always be a part of your learning experience. It is through these issues that we learn the most. You can motivate someone by finding what they are interested in and encouraging them in that area.Every student has a dream and interest in or about something. As teachers we should motivate them to finish their education and pursue that dream. I am motivated to learn because I want to further my education and reach a destination in life. Someone who is not motivated can still learn. It may be much harder, but it can be done. I teach myself some things. I have some strengths that come naturally to me.But, I am in need of guidance in most things. A teacher has a huge role in helping an individual learn. A teacher has to pull out the strengths and weaknesses of a student and help them overcome and rise above and beyond their expectations. It is a huge task, but with time can be done. I really learned from this video that children are so smart and can learn very quickly. Sometimes we do not give enough credit to these young individuals. Also, when someone is interested and motivated to do something, the sky is the limit in their success. One question I take away from this video is "As teachers are we going to do everything we can to help our students be motivated to learn?"

"The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch

This lecture had many good points presented.First, recognizing your dreams is important but you must be able to lead your life first. Success does not happen by dreaming and wishing. You have to put forth effort to reach a goal. Live your life to the best of your ability and watch what happens.
The moment a teacher stops correcting, they have stopped caring. As teachers, we have to constantly correct and guide students. This is a very crucial part of our job. We must be willing to invest our time and energy into giving our best to our students.

Brick walls show our dedication. We are constantly facing problems and obstacles in our profession. What we do about our problems defines us. We must be willing to do what it takes to overcome issues and resolve them to the best of our ability. Giving up is not an option. Our students deserve the absolute best we can give them.

When you get feedback listen. As teachers we must listen to our students, piers, parents and other authority. Sometimes you may recieve constructive
criticism and other times you may recieve negative criticism. However, you will never know unless you listen. Evaluate what people are saying to you before you speak. Listening is a fascinating quality to possess.

Show gratitude at all times in your life.As Americans we have so much to be grateful for. As college students we should be grateful we have the opportunity to be furthering our education. Always be grateful for the opportunities given to you. So many people are unable to go to school for whatever reason around the world. Count your blessings and always possess an attitude of gratitude.Dont complain, work harder.
Find the best in everybody, no matter how long you have to wait for them to show it.

Summary Post C4K

My first student that I commented on was Adrianna. She is a brilliant student from Noel Elementary School. The first post I read about was regarding herself. She is very self motivated and desiring to do well in school. She set goals for herself and is trying to achieve those goals. I let her know I thought she was quite an inspiration for everyone young
and older.

The second post was regarding Adrianna's Manifesto post. She had posted some goals that she wanted to share regarding school. She wanted to listen and learn to her teacher. She wanted to ask questions in class if she did not understand a concept. She wanted to always do her best. These were just a few of the goals she had set for herself. I commented to her to let her know I thought these were great goals and she would go far with that kind of perspective.

The last post I made was for DJ at PT England School. DJ is a young girl who was experimenting with Garage Band. She presented a video on a blog with her sharing a picture that she had drawn. I encouraged her to continue to use Garage Band and other technology for her education. DJ seemed very bright for her age and interested in today's technology.

"The Networked Student" by Wendy Drexler
This video pointed out many interesting points. Students can use so many tools available today to further their education. This video presented so many different ways to communicate with other students across the world. International communication with other students is a brilliant idea. I feel that this idea can only reinforce and further assist students.

Teachers are still needed despite twenty first century technology. Teachers are needed to assist and answer questions for students. Computers are a wonderful resource and tool, but many times only a teacher can really be of use to a student. It is important to understand that the job of a teacher should never be eliminated. The relationship that is developed and so often needed, can not be duplicated by a machine.

There were many ideas presented that were very creative and innovative. I feel that this could be the future of education. Technology has so many advances available for teachers and students. These resources should be used and processed in the classroom.

"A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment"
This video was very helpful in supporting the idea of PLN's. This concept really does create a freedom and independence for students. PLN's are very innovative and I can see them working in todays schools. It is important to create various ways of presenting subject matter. This idea of PLN's for the classroom creates a whole new avenue of studying, lecturing and presenting materiel.

"The Machine is Changing Us" by Michael Wesch
"Self centered modes of self fulfillment are leading to disengagement among today's generation of students". This statement really does captivate the time frame of todays students. This generation is very much "self focused". It is very obvious that the number one priority is so often self desires. I feel like the video does bring light to the idea of getting past yourself and focusing on working as one. Working together as a generation united for a purpose.

This idea does relate to me and to my generation. It is very easy to focus on only what you want. It is easy to "not care" about many essential facts of life. It is easy to "give up" on life. Focusing on the idea that we do have a greater purpose, and we can do so much as a united generation. Putting aside our differences and coming together.

Putting aside your differences is essential in your career. Working together is vital in a school. Teachers cannot go in various directions and expect to move forward. Academically, teachers have to prepare to come together and come up with a plan to succeed. Relating with others and creating plans of success is essential in todays classroom.

"The Benefits of Podcasting in the Classroom".
I felt like this video was very informative and helpful in supporting the idea of podcasting in today's classroom. I feel that podcasting would be very beneficial in aiding students. Podcasting would allow teachers to inform parents of what is really happening inside of the classroom. Students could get extra help when needed from the podcast, and parents could be more involved in their child's education.

"Eagle Nest Radio and Class Blog"
I really thought this podcast was very amazing. This was a perfect example of students and teachers using todays technology in the classroom. There are so many ways to use technology if teachers are open to the idea. These students did a wonderful job at creating this podcast and blog. I feel like the schools can only benefit if todays technology is used for educational purposes. This podcast and blog really should revolutionize how school is operated today.

"Judy Scharf Podcast Collection"
This website was very helpful. It listed so many tips and procedures to follow when making a podcast. I felt that this website really does prepare you for making a future podcast. The idea of making a podcast can be a little intimidating, however this website really breaks it down to a very simple level of understanding the process. Organizing your thoughts and ideas is very crucial to a successful podcast. I really appreciate the information provided on this website.

"Dont Teach Your Kids This Stuff Please?"
I found this article to be enlightening and challenging. I feel that technology can be used in the classroom in a positive and successful manner. Todays generation is technologically driven. In light of this fact, teachers can use this avenue of teaching to drive home success in teh classroom. Accompanied by responsible supervision and guidance, students can learn so much with the aid of todays technolgy.

Scott Mcleod is a professor at Iowa State University and Director of the UCEA CASTLE program.

"The iSchool Initiative"
I believe that the concept of the ischool would be a wonderful solution to many problems being encountered today. The money being saved would be substantial. The features that the ischool would convey is really amazing. Everything a student and teacher would need would be covered in a quick and organized manner.

I hope this idea is seriously considered. The ischool concept would be combining the idea and fact that technology can be used in todays school system. Technology can be of use and of aid to teachers and students across the world. It is up to the educators to pursue the technological resources available and incorporate them in the modern day setting.

"The Lost Generation"
I feel this video was very inspiring and challenging to this generation. I believe that this generation can make a difference when they have a passion and purpose. The way the video was presented created a unique presentation. Negative words can be turned into positive words if the individual is focused.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir
This video was amazing! I found the whole idea of a virtual choir to be a wonderful mix of todays technology. This video simply proves the point that there are so many ways an individual can be creative with technology. There are so many ways to be inventive with all the technological resources available. Wonderful video!

Blog Post 3

Michael Wesch : A Vision of Students Today:
I felt like this video was very accurate of how college life is today. Many students feel like the curriculum and the lectures presented are not relevent to their future. Technology is a huge part of college life and in people's lives in general. I feel like it is very important to incorporate new techniques using technology to present and inform current college students.

Facebook, Twitter, blogs, all can be used for educational purposes. This concept of social networking in the classroom requires creativity. Creativity connects with students resulting in better learning and comprehension.Students can be effective in the future workplace if the desire to be educated is a strong motivation in their life.

"It's Not About the Technology" By Kelly Hines
Ms.Hines did make a good point in the article. Technology is not everything when you are trying to teach. There are important methods of teaching that must never be replaced. It is very important that problem solving skills be sharpened in the classroom. This is one of the many skills that need to be reinforced in the classroom.

Teachers need to be inventive and aware of the latest developments in teaching styles and methods with or without technology. There are some skills a computer is not the best resource. Teachers are definetely still needed today in the classroom. Technology is a great resource for todays classroom, however a teacher needs to be sensitive to the best avenue of teaching in his own environment.

Karl Fisch: "Is it Okay to be a Technologically Illiterate Teacher?"
It is not ok to be illiterate in any way as a teacher. I feel like it is crucial for a teacher to be educated in all areas. When a teacher is misinformed about technology or ignorant, the teacher is preventing the students from reaching their full potential.

Teachers have an abundance of knowledge that can be used to benefit students. Technology can assist teachers in a significant way. However, teachers must not be overly technologically driven. Meaning, using technology to do all the work in the classroom. Students need their teachers. Technology can only do so much and then the teacher must step up and fill in the gap.

Summary of C4T #1

The first post I commented on was by WM Chamberlain titled "I had Cancer". This post was in regards to Mr. Chamberlain having a case of melanoma. Thankfully he was able to receive treatment and make a full healthy recovery. Mr. Chamberlain explained in the post how this was a very difficult and stressful time initially because he thought that this issue was going to stop him from teaching this year. Thankfully, all melanoma was removed and he is makeing a full recovery. My comment consisted of commending Mr. Chamberlain of his strength and courage to get through this situation as I can only imagine the stress it was to overcome.

The second post was titled "Online High School" by Joe Mcclung. This post was talking about the issue of offering a high school program offered completely through the computer. The concept of a classroom setting would be labeled as obsolete. My comment about this post related my concern about this idea. I feel that online high school would not be the best option. Motivation, social interaction and discipline are a few of the issues I see arising. Many students need assistance with current subjects
that are being taught in the school systems today. If students were to study and perform curriculum excercises at home the assistance needed may not be available. However, this is a very interesting idea and concept and it will be interesting to see if anything does develop in the future.

Blog Post 2

Did You Know? By Karl Fisch

I found this video to be very informative of how technology has taken over the modern world. We are surrounded with new innovations everywhere we turn. Simple everyday conviences such as a cell phone, computer and internet are taken for granted. These electronics and tools are so beneficial and constantly changing.

Social networking has completely revolutionzed the world. The very idea of being able to see and speak to someone through a computer half way across the world is simply mind blowing. As teachers we can use this technology as a very valuable aid. The internet provides endless opportunities of education. Technology is constantly changing and it is our responsibility as teachers to utilize these avenues and teach others the benefits of educating your mind.

Mr. Winkle Wakes by Mathew Needleman

This video points out the various changes in technology and way of business in todays major establishments such as hospitals. The video insinuated that todays schools are not involving the latest technology in the classrooms. Based on what I have observed in the local Mobile County Elementary Schools, I do not agree with this video. I feel like technology is being used and it is very effective.

Smartboards are great inventions. I believe this resource is a huge success among teachers and students. Also, the schools I have observed, computers are stationed in the classroom and are being utilized. Technology may not be used in all areas of the world, but in some school systems it is successfully being incorporated.

The Importance of Creativity by Sir Ken Robinson

This idea presented in this film is very crucial in todays society. Intelligence so often is based on educational status. I believe the underlying concept presented is that everyone has different abilities and skills. Not everyone is an Einstein. Creativity should not be limited to just test taking skills.

Diverse, Dynamic, Distinct, three words that can easily define creativity. As teachers, it is our responsibilty to realize and help develop our students strengths. This task is very vital in todays classroom. Many students are discouraged about their academic performance and are not encouraged about other areas of success in their life. It takes many different types of proffessions to help create stability in our world today.Creativity is very essential in todays classroom and should always be a priority for todays teacher.

Harness Your Student's Digital Smarts by Vicki Davis

This idea of allowing students to exert their creativity and knowledege of technology in the classroom can only be beneficial. This concept connects with the current generation. Students are so technologically driven incorporating educational concepts amidst blogs and social networking can only reinforce success. I think allowing students to teach at times can be very beneficial.

Any way a teacher can get a student to think outside of the box is welcome. Educating students on using current technology to reach other students across the world is genius. This idea is an endless resource for new learning. When applying these concepts a teacher is creating an atmosphere of learning.
